Satellite Beach Named One of Florida's Safest Cities
Satellite Beach is located on Florida's beautiful Space Coast, nestled between the Atlantic Ocean and Indian River. It's a tropical paradise with a tight-knit community and a small town feel. Not surprisingly, Satellite Beach now reigns the #1 spot on The National Council for Home Safety and Security's annual report, "The Safest Cities in Florida 2020", identifying Satellite Beach as Florida's safest city.
Satellite Beach wasn't the only Space Coast city to make the list. Cities Palm Bay and West Melbourne made the top 50, with Palm Bay identified as the 47th safest city and West Melbourne identified as the 49th safest city.
How Florida's Safest Cities Were Identified
The National Council for Home Safety and Security reviewed the most recent FBI Uniform Crime Report statistics in conjunction with their own population data and internal research. It should be noted, they removed any cities that failed to submit a complete crime report to the FBI, as well as cities with populations under 10,000.
The cities were ranked based on the number of reported violent crimes* and property crimes* per 1,000 people. These variables were then weighted, with violent crimes accounting for 1.5 of the total, due to their severity.
*Violent Crimes: to include aggravated assault, murder, rape, and robbery
*Property Crimes: to include burglary, arson, larceny-theft, and motor vehicle theft
